si fa più bell'al sole,
quando men arder suole.
Ma se fin dentro sente
il vivo raggio ardente,
dimostran fuor le scolorite spoglie
l'intern'ardor che la radice accoglie.
Così la verginella
amando si fa bella,
quand'Amor la lusinga e non l'offende.
Ma se 'l suo vivo ardore
la penetra nel core,
dimostra la sembianza impallidita
ch'ardente è la radice de la vita.
