De avond kraakt zijn harde knoken
- Hij heeft een prachtig stille droom -
Het koude purper hangt zijn strooken
Achter mijn appelboom.

Het duister zit al in zijn knoesten
- Wat staat hij taai, wat doet hij vroom! -
De winter zal je hart verwoesten
Mijn dappre appelboom.

Diep in mijn hart voel ik de winter
- O dat de donkre winter koom'! -
Ik sta zoo vast en flink als ginter
