Ik moet mijn venster sluiten;
Reeds menig vlinder op de vlam
Van 't nachtlijk licht naar binnen kwam
Of gonsde voor de ruiten.

Hoe dicht is het kastanjeloof
Hoe geuren de seringen,
Hoe gaat de krekel ginds in 't gras
Alsof de dag al komend was
Opnieuw aan 't zingen!

En drinkend lang de geuren van
De blank-bloeiende boomen,
Denk ik: zou, voor de slaap mij vindt,
De vogel, die de nachten mint
Nog zingen komen?
