Hun gikk langs med stranden så ung omkring,
 hun tenkte på ingen verdens ting.
 Da kom det en maler og satte seg ned
    ved sjøens bredd,
    i skyggens fred,-
 han malede stranden og henne med.

 Men saktere gikk hun om ham i ring,
 hun tenkte på én, en eneste ting.
 Det var på hans billede, hvor hun så
    seg selv at stå,
    seg selv at stå -
 nedspeilet i gjøen med himlens blå!

 Hun dreves, hun droges så vidt omkring,
 hun tenkte på alle verdens ting -
 langt, langt over sjøen, og dog så nær
    mot stranden her,
    mot mannen der,
 å nei, hva der kom for et solskinnsvær!
