So steht am Ziele unser heißes Streben;
o heil'ge Stadt; schwer brachen wir uns Bahn
zu dir, und mancher büßte mit dem Leben,
der sich als Sieger hoffte dir zu nah'n.

Ja, Tausende wohl vielen, die gestritten
und kühnlich starben für des Heilands Grab;
Kaum hätten wir ertragen, was wir litten,
wenn neue Hoffnung uns nicht Tröstung gab.

Doch nun die Heiden wollen ganz wir zwingen,
in deren Hand wir dich, o heil'ge, seh'n,
und ohne Zagen wieder dich erringen,
denn Mut und Glaube kann nicht untergeh'n.
