Ich sah im ahnenden Waldesdunkel
Geheimnißvolle Purpurblumen glühn, 
Und hörte fernes Vogelsingen  -- 
Es schein die Abendsonne durch der Zweige Grün. 

Ich wollt' in überwallenden Gefühlen
Die Purpurblumen in der Nähe sehn,
Den Vogel in der Nähe singen hören, 
Wollt' in der Abendsonne Strahlen näher gehn.  

Doch ach!  ich konnt nicht meine Sehnsucht stillen,
Die Purpurblumen waren schon verblüht,
Der Vogel war Davon geflogen  -- 
Der leise Flug der Nacht zog trüb' mir ins Gemüth.
