Kalt knistert Herbstwind im dürren Rohr,
Das im Abend ergraut ist;
Krähen flattern vom Weidenbaume landeinwärts.

Einsam steht und rastet am Strande ein alter Mann,
Spürt den Wind im Haar, die Nacht und nahenden Schnee,
Blickt vom Schattenufer ins Lichte hinüber,
Wo zwischen Wolken und See ein Streifen
Fernsten Strandes noch warm im Lichte leuchtet:
Goldenes Jenseits, selig wie Traum und Dichtung. 

Fest im Auge hält er das leuchtende Bild,
Denkt der Heimat, denkt seiner guten Jahre,
Sieht das Gold erbleichen, sieht es erlöschen,
Wendet sich ab und wandert
Langsam vom Weidenbaume landeinwärts.

El fred vent de tardor cruix entre els joncs secs
que al vespre s’agrisen;
els corbs voleien des dels salzes camps endins.

Un ancià reposa solitari a la riba,
percep el vent als seus cabells, la nit i la neu que s’apropa,
des de l’ombrívol ribatge, esguarda la claror a l’altre costat
on, entre els núvols i el llac, un esclat de llum
de la més llunyana riba resplendeix encara:
un daurat més enllà, benaurat com un somni i com la poesia.

Fixada als seus ulls, reté la lluminosa imatge,
pensa en el seu país, pensa en els anys feliços,
veu empal·lidir el reflex d’or, veu com s’esvaneix,
es gira i se’n va caminant de la salzeda
lentament camp endins.
