Uw jonge melodieën volle vingeren
 Strookten onwetend in 't gordijngedempt
 Vertrek vol schaûw en trillend zonnewingeren
 Langs dit vergeten, in zijn hoek beklemd

 Spinet, gerijd uit bleekivoren zingeren,
 Wonderlijk teêr en smartzuiver gestemd,
 En trilden in verrukking na, - toen ging er een
 Brand op van liedren breed en ongetemd.
  
 En dag en nacht en zon en maan verstralen
 Om de twee bleeke vlammen Uwer handen,
 Die vonkesproeiend langs de toetsen dwalen.
 
Voor huis, op straat, tot diep in stille landen
 Luisteren menschen naar het nachtegalen, -
 O ziel, mijn ziel, dit is uw ademhalen!
