Le ciel comme un lac d'or pâle s'évanouit,
On dirait que la plaine, au loin déserte, pense ;
Et dans l'air élargi de vide et de silence
S'épanche la grande âme triste de la nuit.

Pendant que çà et là brillent d'humbles lumières,
Les grands boeufs accouplés rentrent par les chemins ;
Et les vieux en bonnet, le menton sur les mains,
Respirent le soir calme aux portes des chaumières.

Le paysage, où tinte une cloche, est plaintif
Et simple comme un doux tableau de primitif,
Où le Bon Pasteur mène un agneau blanc qui saute.

Les astres au ciel noir commencent à neiger,
Et là-bas, immobile au sommet de la côte,
Rêve la silhouette antique d'un berger.
