Der Waldsaum
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Vom ersten Tageslicht umsprüht,
Von wilden Rosen hell umblüht,
Wie lächelst du, mein Tannensaum,
So hold, so hold im Morgentraum! --

Doch wie die Mutter weckt ihr Kind,
Kommt sanft und leis heran der Wind;

Läßt fliegen deine Vöglein all,
Zu wecken ihn mit lautem Schall;
Und wirfst den goldenen Sonnenschein
In jeden Busch und Grund hinein. --

Horch! wie's nun braust und rauscht und klingt,
Der Dank dir froh entgegendringt!
Und wie der Morgenpsalm erschallt
Von nah und fern im ganzen Wald!

The forest edge
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Surrounded by the spray of the first daylight,
Brightly surrounded by the blooming of wild roses,
How you smile, my border of firs,
So beautifully, so beautifully in the dream of morning! --

But as a mother wakens her child,
The wind comes along gently and quietly;
It plays with the treetops high in the blue,
And sweeps the dew from your grass.

Then you wake up! -- How wondrously noble
You rise up out of the sea of fire!
And surge and undulate, and in a moment
Send your greetings to the forest.

You let all your birdlets fly
To waken [the forest] with loud resounding;
And you toss the golden sunshine
Into every bush and declivity. --

Hark! how it roars now and soughs and rings,
The gratitude that surges joyfully toward you!
And how the morning psalm rings out
From near and far throughout the forest!
