Gute Nacht
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Weiche Nebelschleier hüllen
Ein, was auf der Erde wohnt.
Hoch am Himmel geht die stillen
Bahnen hin der goldne Mond.
     In der Ferne
     Tauchen Sterne
Auf und halten treue Wacht.
     Gute Nacht!

Leise Schlummerlieder singet
Noch das Meer im Abendwind.
Und ins warme Bettchen bringet
Jede Mutter nun ihr Kind;
     Wohl geborgen,
     Frei von Sorgen,
Schlummerts ein, sein Engel wacht.
     Gute Nacht!

Süßer Friede! Wollest walten
Und beherrschen jedes Herz.
Und in freundlichen Gestalten
Schwebet, Träume, erdenwärts,
     Bis die Sonne
     Voller Wonne
Uns am Morgen wieder lacht.
     Gute Nacht!

Alle, die mit bangem Zagen
Stund' um Stunde hingezählt,
Die des Tages Last getragen,
Die mit Schmerzen sich gequält,
     All' ihr Müden
     Ruht in Frieden,
Einer ist, der für euch wacht.
     Gute Nacht!

Daß ein sanfter Schlummer stärke
Alle, die zur Ruhe gehn,
Um zu neuem Tagewerke
Neu gekräftigt aufzustehn,
     Muth zum Leben,
     Kraft zum Streben,
Werde Jedem dargebracht.
     Gute Nacht!

Good night
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Soft veils of mist shroud
That which lives upon the earth.
High upon the heavens the golden moon
Travels its silent paths.
     In the distance
     Stars rise up
And keep their faithful watch.
     Good night!

In the evening breeze, the sea
Still sings soft slumber songs.
And every mother now puts her child
Into a warm little bed.
     Quite snug,
     Free of anxieties,
[The child] falls asleep, its angel keeps watch.
     Good night!

Sweet peace! May you prevail [over]
And rule every heart.
And in amiable forms,
Waft earthward, dreams,
     Until the sun
     Full of bliss
Smiles [upon us] again in the morning.
     Good night!

All who in anxious trembling
Counted hour upon hour,
Who bore the burden of the day,
Who plagued themselves under pains,
     All ye weary ones,
     Rest in peace,
There is One who keeps watch for you.
     Good night!

May a soft slumber strengthen
All who go to rest,
That they may rise strengthened
For the new day's work;
     May courage to live,
     Strength to strive,
Be given to everyone.
     Good night!
