by Alfred Lichtenstein (1889 - 1914)
Translation by Alfred Lichtenstein (1889 - 1914)

Mädchen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Sie halten den Abend der Stuben nicht aus.
Sie schleichen in tiefe Sternstraßen hinaus.

Wie weich ist die Welt im Laternenwind!
Wie seltsam summend das Leben zerrinnt . . .
Sie laufen an Gärten und Häusern vorbei,
Als ob ganz fern ein Leuchten sei,
Und sehen jeden lüsternen Mann
Wie einen süßen Herrn Heiland an

Girls
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
They cannot stand their rooms in the evening.
They creep out into deep starry streets.

How gentle is the world in the streetlights' wind!
How strangely buzzing life melts away...
They go by gardens and houses,
As though very far off there might be a light,
And they look upon every horny man
As a sweet gentleman savior
