Ihr Lied in weiche Luft,
Des Klosters Thürme ragen
Empor in blauem Duft;
Tief unten liegt gebreitet
Die Welt im Abendgold,
Der Tag doch, eh' er scheidet,
Grüßet Maria hold.
Des Ave's sanfte Weise
Tönt nach in Wald und Feld,
Die Ruhe senkt sich leise,
Ätherisch auf die Welt.
Und Erd' und Himmel senken
Sich in einander leis,
Ein Sinnen und ein Denken,
Wofür ich's Wort nicht weiß.
Des Abendsterns Gefunkel
Stimmt milder jeden Schmerz,
Der Glaube drängt vom Dunkel
Hinauf das müde Herz.
Ave Maria! flüstert
Mit Andacht Herz und Mund.
Ob's auch auf Erden düstert,
Licht ist der Seele Grund.
Ave Maria! hauchet
Im stillen Thal die Nacht,
Die Mutter Gottes tauchet
Aus blauem Äther sacht.
Und mit den Glockenschwingen
Fliegt zu ihr Herz und Gruß,
Den selig wiederbringen
Der Stern am Himmel muß.

Their song into the soft air,
The towers of the convent rise
Up in the blue scents;
Far below the world
Lies spread out in the evening gold,
Before it departs the day still
Beautifully greets [the Virgin] Mary.
The soft strains of the Ave
Echo in forest and field,
Peace descends quietly,
Ethereally upon the world.
And heaven and earth sink
Into each other quietly,
A pondering and a reasoning
For which I do not know the word.
The twinkle of the evening star
Makes every pain feel more mild,
From out of the darkness, faith
Urges the weary heart upward.
Ave Maria! every heart and mouth
Whispers devoutly.
Though it may grow dreary upon earth,
There is light in the depths of the soul.
Ave Maria! the night
Breathes in the silent valley,
The Mother of God emerges
Gently from out of the blue aether.
And with the tolling of the bells
Heart and greeting fly toward her,
[A greeting] which must be blessedly
Returned by the star upon the heavens.
