by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926)

Die Mutter
Language: German (Deutsch)
Aufwärts die Theaterrampe
rollen dröhnend die Karossen,
abseits unter trüber Lampe
steht ein altes Weib verdrossen.

Nur wenn jäh ein Hengst mal scheute,
wars, daß sie zusammenschrecke;
niemand aus dem Strom der Leute
sieht die Alte in der Ecke.

An die neue "Größe" dachte,
von ihr sprach man nur.—Die Güte
eines Grafen, hieß es, brachte
herrlich ihr Talent zur Blüte.

Später. Jubelstürme hallten
in den Schlußklang der Trompeten....
Aber draußen kams der Alten,
heimlich für ihr Kind zu beten.

Confirmed with Rainer Maria Rilke, Erste Gedichte, Leipzig: Insel-Verlag, 1918
