Sahst du ihn hernieder schweben
in der Morgenröthe Lichtgewand?
Palmen strahlten in des Engels Hand;
sein Berühren trennt des Geistes Leben
von der Erdenhülle schwerem Band.

Wem, o Engel, rufet dein Erscheinen?
Sag, wem gilt dein Flug so ernst und hehr?
Was erblick' ich! Aller Augen weinen,
ach, ihr Liebling ist nicht mehr!

Lächelnd schlief er ein, des Himmels Frieden
strahlt vom vielgeliebten Angesicht,
und die Mien', in der sein Geist hienieden
sich verklärt, verließ ihn sterbend nicht.

L’has vist davallar surant
en la lluminosa vestidura de l’aurora?
Les palmes resplendeixen a la mà de l’àngel;
el seu frec separa la vida de l’esperit
del feixuc vincle de l’embolcall de la terra.

A qui, oh àngel, crida la teva aparició?
Digues, a qui s’adreça el teu vol tan formal i noble?
Què veig! Tots els ulls ploren,
ai, el seu estimat ha perdut la vida!

Somrient, es va adormir, la pau del cel
resplendeix del seu rostre tan estimat
i el semblant, en el que el seu esperit aquí a la terra
es transfigurà, no l’ha deixat al morir.
