Ein Sonnenblick
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
  Du Sonnenblick, so freundlich hold,
Hab Dank für deinen milden Strahl,
Wie lacht, verklärt von deinem Gold,
Der Himmel gleich und Berg und Thal!
Wie schimmert mir die weite Welt,
Und strahlt mein Auge hell dazu:
Du Licht am dunkeln Himmelszelt,
Wie bist du reich, du armes du!

  Du Sonnenblick, verhüllet dich
Mir auch die düstre Wolke bald,
Noch lacht mir fort so inniglich
Der Himmel doch und Au und Wald!
Und fort scheint Alles mir verklärt,
Und jauchzt mein Herz im Wandern froh:
Nie hast du, Sonne, dich bewährt
Am hellsten Tage freundlich so!

  Du Sonnenblick, wie wenig doch
Braucht's einen Armen zu erfreun,
Und täglich seine Wonne noch
Im tiefsten Dunkel zu erneun!
Hab Dank, hab Dank, du milder Strahl,
Für deinen Trost von Herzensgrund:
Ein Himmelslicht scheint jeder Qual,
Und nie weicht Gottes Friedensbund!

A glimpse of the sun
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
You glimpse of the sun, so amiably lovely,
I thank you for your gentle beam,
Transfigured by your gold, how sky
And mountain and valley immediately smile!
How the wide world shimmers before me,
And my eye beams brightly along with it:
You light upon the dark canopy of heaven,
How rich you are, you poor thing, you!

You glimpse of the sun, though the dark cloud
May soon hide you from me,
Yet still the sky and meadow and forest
Continue to smile so dearly for me!
  And everything still seems transfigured,
And my heart rejoices happily while I wander:
Never have you, sun, proved yourself
Thus amiably upon the brightest day!

You glimpse of the sun, how little it takes
To make a poor man happy,
And daily to renew his joy
Even in the deepest darkness!
I thank you, I thank you from the bottom of my heart
You mild beam, for your comfort:
A light from heaven shines upon every agony,
And God's covenant of peace never vanishes!
