...És másnap halkan a szívébe célzott És elesett. - Hogy elkísértem őt, A hold delelt az égen s holtfehér volt, Ő némán állt meg a halál előtt. A holdba nézett és a hűs fenyőkre, Melyek őrt álltak bús kövek felett! Nem szólt. Oly csöndes volt, mint kertek ősze, Ha december jő és minden beteg. A holdba nézett. Én nedves szeméből Kiolvastam a titkot, a nagyot: A holdba néz és nem lát több napot. Kezet fogott velem. Az éj, a késői, Úgy hallgatott, mint ősmély kriptabolt. Becsöngetett. Halálharangja szólt.
