Milyen sötét-sötét a Balaton,
s a nyár után hogy véreznek a fák.

Tündér Tihany, felelsz-e énnekem,
ha azt mondom még egyszer: ifjuság?

Nem szól a visszhang és szivem se szól,
csak ők kacagnak még, a gyerekek.

Trillás örömük az eget veri,
én hallgatom, de már nem nevetek.

Esőköpeny lóg fáradt vállamon,
a lábaimnál targally és göröngy.

A gyógyszalonba sápadt nő figyel
a gyertyalángnál és a foga gyöngy.

Ábrándozik lehangolt zongorán,
múlt bánatánál csöndesen időz.

Egy hangot üt meg. Újra megüti.
Elsápadok. Azt mondja, itt az ősz.

...És másnap halkan a szívébe célzott
És elesett. - Hogy elkísértem őt,
A hold delelt az égen s holtfehér volt,
Ő némán állt meg a halál előtt.

A holdba nézett és a hűs fenyőkre,
Melyek őrt álltak bús kövek felett!
Nem szólt. Oly csöndes volt, mint kertek ősze,
Ha december jő és minden beteg.

A holdba nézett. Én nedves szeméből
Kiolvastam a titkot, a nagyot:
A holdba néz és nem lát több napot.

Kezet fogott velem. Az éj, a késői,
Úgy hallgatott, mint ősmély kriptabolt.
Becsöngetett. Halálharangja szólt.
