Herbstfäden
Language: German (Deutsch)
An Bäumen und Gestäuden
Sind schon die Blätter falb;
Ade, ihr tausend Freuden,
Bald wintert's allenthalb.
Und mit dem Sommer ziehen
Die Elfen aus dem Wald,
Dem Nebel zu entfliehen,
Der herwallt trüb und kalt.
Am Waldessaum sie halten
Zum Abschied frohen Tanz,
Sahst du die Duftgestalten
Noch nie im Mondenglanz?
Oft bleibt am Busche hangen
Ihr Schleier wunderfein,
Früh Morgens siehst du prangen
Die Fäden im Sonnenschein.

Autumnal gossamer threads
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Upon trees and bushes
The leaves are already losing their colours;
Adieu, ye thousandfold joys,
Soon it shall be winter all around.
And with the summer, the elves
Depart from the forest
To escape the fog
That surges hither, dreary and cold.
At the forest’s edge they hold
A joyful dance in farewell,
Have you never yet seen the
Airy figures in the moonlight?
Often upon the bushes their wondrously
Fine veil is entangled,
Early in the morning in the sunshine you see
The gossamer threads, resplendent.
