Was hilft das Schimpfen und das Fluchen,
Sie ziehen sich zu viel zurück!
Sie sollten brav Gesellschaft suchen,
Und Tanz und lärmende Musik.

Hypochondrist:
 Ach! wollt ich nicht schon manche liebe Stunde
 So bei Gesang und Geige mich ergötzen?
 Jedoch da hör ich tief im Hintergrunde
 An einemfort den Tod die Sense wetzen!

What use is cursing and swearing,
You're living too much on your own!
You ought to seek out companionship,
With dancers and rowdy musicians. 

Hypochondriac:
 Oh, don't think I never wished to spend time
 Basking in the sounds of singers and fiddlers!
 It's just that in the far distance I hear
 Death forever whetting his scythe.
