Die wachter die blies aan den dach op hogher tinnen daer hi lach, daer blies hi aen des daghes schijn: ‘waer lievekens bi malcander sijn, so scheiden si saen; voor tgroene wout den dach breect aen.’ - ‘Hoort aen, o jonghelinc, mijn beclach, ten is noch ghenen lichten dach, die mane schijnt door die wolken claer, die wachter baert ons angsten swaer, dat claghe ic di, die middernacht en is noch niet voorbi.’ Hi helst sijn liefste, si helst hem weer, hi custse na sijns herten begheer. Si moesten scheiden nu ter tijt. Hi troc al over die heide verblijt al door den dou: ‘so seghen u God, mijn schone vrou.’ - ‘Adieu, schoon lief,’ sei tmeisken fijn, ‘beware u God voor druc ende pijn, die minen herte trooste boot. Ghedenc, schoon lief, der smerten groot die ic nu lijt. Mijn herte blijft u immer ghewijt.’ Wat troc hi van den vingher sijn? Van roden goude een vingherlijn: ‘hout daer, mijn liefste, desen pant, ghedencke mijns int verre lant, nu ende altijt ghi mi die alder liefste sijt.’ Die ons dit liedeken heeft ghemaect, die nacht al dore hi heeft ghewaect; die jonghelinc hadde vrou Venus in ere, voor schone vroukens hi bernde sere te aller stont: ‘mi hoghet, lief, dijn rode mont.’
