Hoe zingt die eene vogel nog

Hoe zingt die eene vogel nog ,
Zoo droef , zoo klagend ?
Wat wil die eene vogel toch?
Hij zingt zoo vragend.

De lucht is blank , de boomen staan
Zoo kalm te slapen.
Geen adem suizelt door de laan
Of roert mijn slapen.

De maan ligt bleek in ' t vijvernat,
De lanen doomen.
De zwanen drijven in een bad 
Van manedroomen .

Maar zou dat wel een vogel  zijn ,
Zoo droef aan ' t klagen?
Is ' t niet mijn ziel , die zingt van pijn ,
Met klagend vragen?
