Der Todtengräber

Es gräbt beim Sternenscheine 
Der Todtengräber ein Grab;  --  
Aus seinen Augen stürzen 
Viel heiße Thränen herab. 

Warum der Mann wohl weinen, 
So bitterlich weinen mag, 
Der ja der Gräber viele 
Gegraben seit Jahr und Tag?  --  

Und allgemach erbleichen 
Die Stern' am Azurzelt,  --  
Die Morgensonne bestrahlet 
Das stille Todtenfeld. 

Da wankt der Todtengräber 
Zum frisch gegrabenen Grab, 
Und senkt mit blutendem Herzen 
Sein Töchterlein hinab.
