Les carmélites

Parmi l'ombre du cloître elles vont solennelles,
Et leurs pas font courir un frisson sur les dalles,
Cependant que du bruit funèbre des sandales
Monte un peu la rumeur chaste qui chante en elles.


Au séraphique éclat des austères prunelles
Répondent les flambeaux en des gammes modales;
Parmi le froid du cloître elles vont solennelles,
Et leurs pas font des chants de velours sur les dalles.


Une des leurs retourne aux landes éternelles
Trouver enfin l'oubli du monde et des scandales
Vers sa couche de mort, au fond de leurs dédales
C'est pourquoi, cette nuit, les nonnes fraternelles
Dans leur cloître longtemps ont marché solennelles.
