Mijn hart klopt hoorbaar

Mijn hart klopt hoorbaar in de zwarte toren,
boven de straten en haar dof gerucht,
en 't hijgt in zwenkende en geknotte vlucht
en klaagt in klamme duisternis verloren...

Mijn harte weeklaagt in de zwarte toren,
al zijne smarten in de jammerlucht
uitwenend in een lange stervenszucht,
en weer tot nieuwe jammerklacht herboren.

Hoor! 't is mijn hart, dat ze te morzel trekken,
dat, afgebeuld van 't pijnlijk vezelrekken,
in d'eeuwge nood der aarde om deernis schreit,

en boven hen, die 't martlen, hoog verheven,
hoog boven mensenlust en vreugdeleven,
zijn zware rouwmoed langs de steden spreidt.
