O klamme koude

O klamme koude, die me 't krimpend herte
beklemt, en 't àl ontzielt en mijn gedachten,
als bloemen, dor voor ze in de zonne lachten,
doet nederbuigen onder 't lood der smerte,

- doet nederbuigen in wanhopig smachten,
zo droef, ach, o zo droef, tot haar verterte
de tred des wandlaars, onbewust hoe 't herte
toch pijnlijk krimpen kàn om al die klachten

verloren en niet eens dat lied gezongen,
vol liefde ruisend van miljoenen tongen
en rijk van ingetogen zieleleven.

Mijn hoofd valt zwaar, mijn stramme handen beven;
ik voel onmachtstranen in mijne ogen schieten
en heel mijn leven door mijn vingren vlieten.
