Hält von der Reise Last
Die kleine Karavane
Zu Nacht um's Feuer Rast.
 
Zum Pfühle dient der Rasen,
Zur Seite blitzt die Wehr;
Die müden Rosse grasen
Entsattelt um uns her.
 
Schlaf liegt auf allen Wimpern;
Nur unser Wächter dort
Scheucht mit Guitarrenklimpern
Den Druck vom Auge fort.
 
Ich seh' noch, wie die Flamme
In Aschen roth verglimmt,
Und hinter'm Bergeskamme
Empor der Halbmond schwimmt.
 
Dann, wie durch's Laub der Bäume
Der Nachtwind schauernd rinnt,
Hüll' ich mich ein, und träume
Von dir, mein deutsches Kind.
