Die kleine Karavane
Zu Nacht um's Feuer Rast.
Zum Pfühle dient der Rasen,
Zur Seite blitzt die Wehr;
Die müden Rosse grasen
Entsattelt um uns her.
Schlaf liegt auf allen Wimpern;
Nur unser Wächter dort
Scheucht mit Guitarrenklimpern
Den Druck vom Auge fort.
Ich seh' noch, wie die Flamme
In Aschen roth verglimmt,
Und hinter'm Bergeskamme
Empor der Halbmond schwimmt.
Dann, wie durch's Laub der Bäume
Der Nachtwind schauernd rinnt,
Hüll' ich mich ein, und träume
Von dir, mein deutsches Kind.

A little caravan
Stops to rest from the journey
Around a fire at night.
The grass serves as our pillow,
At our sides our arms flash;
Unsaddled, the tired horses
Are grazing all about us.
Sleep lies upon all lashes;
Only our watchman there
Is seeking to chase the pressure
From his eyes by strumming on his guitar.
I still see how the flame
Goes out in the red ashes,
And how behind the mountain ridge
The half-moon floats upward.
Then as the night-wind shiveringly
Flows through the foliage of the trees,
I wrap myself up and dream
Of you, my German maid.
