from Volkslieder (Folksongs)
Translation by Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm (1785 - 1863)

Gefangene Nachtigall
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Serbian (Српски)
Schön singt die nachtigall
im grünen haine
auf schwanken zweiglein,
von dort kommen drei jäger
zu schieszen die nachtigall;
sie bat sie, schieszt mich nicht.
schieszt mich doch nicht todt,
ich will euch singen
im grünen gärtlein,
auf rothem röslein.
fiengen die jäger drei
und trugen davon den vogel
thaten ihn in die höfe,
dasz er ihnen ergötze die liebchen;
will nicht singen nachtigall,
sondern sich nur grämen,
trugen ihn weg die jünglinge,
lieszen ihn hin in die wälder,
beginnt nachtigall zu singen:
weh dem freunde ohne freund,
und der nachtigall ohne hain. --
