Es ist ein tiefes Thal -- die Lüfte schweigen,
Des Baches Wellen lispeln kaum im Fliehn --
Kaum, daß die Stürme, die darüber ziehn,
Der Ulme ruhevolle Wipfel neigen.
 
Die Nebel, die aus seinen gründen steigen,
Des Mühlrads dumpfe Schlummer-Melodieen
Umschlingen sich zu nächt'gen Harmonieen,
Wie Elfentänze mit der Gnomen Reigen.
 
Hier darf ein Herz friedvollen Taktes schlagen,
Hier darf es wieder sich zu trauen wagen,
Und liebend glauben, was es selbst ersinnt.
 
Hier darf der Geist den müden Fittig senken,
Das Aug' am Himmel, seiner Erde denken,
Bis wieder um die Welt sein Flug beginnt.
