Es harret vor dem Thore Ein Reiter und ein Roß. Es scharrt im Sand des Rosses Huf, Es dringt herauf des Reiters Ruf: "Komm mit! komm mit, Genoß!" "Die Seele wird mir bange! Im Glas wird trüb der Wein! Im Mantel grau, auf schwarzem Thier Reckt sich der Mann und ruft nach mir, Ich muß Genoß ihm sein! "So hebt den letzten Becher! Laßt ihn zur Neige gehn!" Es wieh'rt das Roß. Der Reiter lacht. Sie reiten in die ew'ge Nacht Auf Nimmerwiedersehn!
