Das Mädchen am Strande

Wild wogen die Wellen im stürmischen Meer,
es ziehen die Wolken so düster und schwer;
scheu kreisen die Möwen am Ufer entlang,
dumpf rollet des Donners gar grausiger Klang.
Es heulet der Sturmwind durch Wetter und Nacht:
Ihr Schiffer, seid auf die Heimfahrt bedacht!
O denket der weinenden Liebsten am Land
und lenket die flatternden Segel zum Strand!
O wär' ich bei dir in Wetter und Graus,
froh säh' in die stürmende Flut ich hinaus,
und schlüg' um den Nachen die Welle den Arm
und zög' uns hinunter so heiß und so warm,
froh sänk' ich mit dir in den schäumenden Grund,
dich küsste sinkend mein sterbender Mund!
