Je suis pareil à ce nid d'hirondelle
Qui resta vide au retour des hivers ;
Sous les grands toits que la neige a couverts
Plus de baisers, de chants, ni de bruits d'aile.

Je suis pareil à cette citadelle
Abandonnée après de long revers,
Murs dégradés, par la mitraille ouverts,
Et que le temps à son tour démantèle.

Mais, le nid veuf, la brise le ravit ;
Le mur s'écroule enfin, la place forte
Est un rocher que le passant gravit ;

Moi seul j'attends un souffle qui m'emporte :
Depuis longtemps déjà mon âme est morte,
Et mon cadavre obstiné me survit !
