O zu stromzerrissnen Thälern Führt mich, wo das Leben schweigt, Und die Felswand blau und stählern Unerklimmbar aufwärts steigt, Wo der Strauch der wilden Rose, Von der Bäche Schaum besprengt, Zitternd in die bodenlose Abgrundtiefe niederhängt! Wenn in Klüften, tief geborsten, Dort der Sturm das Echo weckt Und aus ihren Felsenhorsten Die verstörten Adler schreckt, Grüßt mit tausendstimm'gen Chören Mich im Wogenschlag der Seen, In dem Rauschen durch die Föhren, Des Naturgeists ew'ges Wehn. Mächtiger! in deinen Schauern Fühl' ich mit gehobner Brust Nicht der Erde kleines Trauern Mehr, noch ihre kleinre Lust, Fühle nur, wie deine Schwinge Aufwärts meine Seele trägt, Und das große Herz der Dinge Mächtig an das meine schlägt.
