Die Glocken rufen um Mitternacht; Die Sehnsucht ist großäugig aufgewacht Und redet sacht. Sie wandert in Nächten und ruht am Tag - Ihr Herz hat einen fiebernden Schlag, Daß ich tief erschrak. Sie ist wie ein irregewandertes Kind - Um die Stirn trägt sie ein Dornengewind, Und schluchzt und sinnt. Nun ward so ruhelos mein Heerd, Da sie um Mitternacht eingekehrt, Und mich weinen gelehrt. Sie löste vom Haupt sich ein Dornenreis, Und drückt' es auf mein Herze leis, - Das blutet nun heiß ... -
