Das war schrecklich, war ensetzlich, 
Als beim allerbesten Spiel 
Unser kleiner Jakob plötzlich 
In den tiefen Zuber fiel. 

Alle Lust war da zu Ende, 
Alle Fröhlichkeit war aus, 
Und ich stand und rang die Hände 
Und ich rief:  Komm doch heraus!  

Doch er that's nicht  --  mit den Beinen 
Strampelt' er, der arme Wicht! 
Und da fing ich an zu weinen, 
Denn was Beßres wußt' ich nicht. 

Endlich kamen sie und fanden 
Ihn  --  noch ist's nicht lange her. 
Hätt' ich nicht dabei standen, 
Was dann wohl geschehen wär'!
