Verständniß
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Wie's auch wild im Busen wogte,
Nicht gestand's mein Mund;
Nur in Tönen, nur in Liedern
Gab der Schmerz sich kund.

Doch sie hat mich [ganz]1 verstanden;
Nicht [gestand's]2 ihr Mund,
Nur in ihrem [Blick]3 die Perle
Gab davon mir Kund'.

Understanding
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
However wildly it heaved within my bosom,
My lips did not admit it;
Only in [musical] sounds, only in songs
Did the pain reveal itself.

Yet she understood me [completely]1;
Her lips did not admit it,
Only the pearl [tear] within her [gaze]2
Gave me tidings of it.
