Tour à tour mélancoliques ou souriant d'amour,
Mon frère, du pays délicieux des mousmés,
Des bateaux-fleurs aux voiles de soie roses,
Du pays des lotus et de toutes ces choses 
Que j'ai, sans les connaître, tant aimées,
Mon frère, dont les mains délicates écrivent 
Ces poésies d'un art subtil et choisi
Que tu sais composer à ravir,
À toi j'envoie ces chansons de fantaisie.

J'y mélange Tyr, Smyrne et les villes Persanes,
Car je ne suis qu'un mauvais élève d'Hafiz,
Et les savants hocheront souvent leurs bonnets d'ânes 
En les lisant, s'ils les lisent !
Mais toi, tu les liras quelque soir charmant,
En fumant du tabac odorant de Damas,
À l'heure où les notes des flûtes meurent,
À l'heure où les amoureux rêvent et passent,
Et peu t'importera, sans doute, 
Que je ne sois pas docteur en géographie,
Et que je ne sache plus sur quelle route 
J'ai cueilli cette fleur, 
Si cette fleur suffit.
