Gleitet schmeichelnd,
Still die unendliche Fluth;
Spielt mit dem höhnisch sich
Spiegelnden, winkenden
Leben der Stadt in verlöschender Gluth.
Langsam gleitet ein Kahn.
Er hält nicht an;
Gleitet hinab in die Ferne,
Dort wo die Sterne
Küssen die Fluth.
Stumm in dem schwarzen gleitenden Boot
Steht mir Frieden verheissend der Tod.
Bang vor dem Leben,
Das mir gegeben,
Schrei ich dir zu:
Gieb mir die Ruh'!
Ende die Not!
Nimm mich, Tod!
