O Täler weit, O Höhen

Language: German (Deutsch)

O Täler weit, O Höhen,
o schöner grüner Wald,
du meiner Lust und Wehen
andächt'ger Aufenthalt!
Da draussen, stets betrogen,
[saust]1 die geschäft'ge Welt;
schlag' noch einmal die Bogen
um mich, du grünes Zelt!

Wenn es beginnt zu tagen,
Die Erde dampft und blinkt,
Die Vögel lustig schlagen,
Daß dir dein Herz erklingt:
Da mag vergehn, verwehen
Das trübe Erdenleid,
Da sollst du auferstehen
In junger Herrlichkeit!

Im Walde steht geschrieben
ein stilles ernstes Wort
vom rechten Tun und Lieben,
und was des Menschen Hort.
Ich habe treu gelesen
die Worte, schlicht und wahr,
und durch mein ganzes Wesen
ward's unaussprechlich klar.

Bald werd' ich dich verlassen,
fremd in die Fremde geh'n,
auf buntbewegten Gassen
des lebens Schauspiel seh'n.
Und mitten in dem Leben
wird deines Ernst's Gewalt
mich Einsamen erheben,
so wird mein Herz nicht alt.

O dalen wijd, o bergen

Language: Dutch (Nederlands) after the German (Deutsch)

O dalen wijd, o bergen,
O prachtig diepgroen woud,
Waarin ‘k mij kon verbergen
Als ‘k blij was of benauwd!
Daarbuiten, steeds bedrogen,
Raast het aards gedoe;
Sluit over mij je bogen,
Groen dak, nog eenmaal toe!

Zodra ’t begint te gloren,
Krijgt d’ aarde damp en glans,
Slaan aan de vogelkoren,
Neigt ’t hart tot zang en dans:
Dan kan vergaan, verdwijnen
Al ’s werelds treurigheid,
Dan kun je weer verschijnen
In kracht en jeugdigheid!

In ’t woud staat stil geschreven
Een woord, een goede raad
Van eerlijk doen en leven
En wat de mensen baat.
Ik heb het trouw gelezen,
Dat woord van simp’le plicht,
En in mijn hele wezen
Werd ’t onuitspreek’lijk licht.

Gauw zal ik je verlaten,
Vreemd in den vreemde gaan,
Op drukbevolkte straten
Het leven gadeslaan.
Maar midden in het leven
Blijft mij jouw ernst vertrouwd,
Word ‘k, eenzaam, opgeheven;
Zo wordt mijn hart niet oud.
