Und mit Wehmut, halb nur heiter,
Scheidest du für immerdar
Von dem Leiden, dem Begleiter,
Der so lange treu dir war.

Stop met bang zijn, draag toch moedig
Al je zorgen, al je pijn;
Ook een wonde, o zo bloedig,
Eens zal zij genezen zijn.
Terwijl sneeuw en ijs hem dekken
Droomt de jonge bloemknop al
Dat de lente hem zal wekken
Met een lieflijk liedgeschal.
Kijk omhoog, het is opwindend,
Want door wolken grijs en grauw
Breekt op ’t laatst toch nog verblindend,
Heerlijk door het hemelblauw.
Echter, ook de droeve dingen
En de tranen die je schreit,
’t Zal, als vreugden die vergingen,
Zoeter schijnen mettertijd.
En met weemoed, niet erg blijde,
Zeg je straks voorgoed vaarwel
Aan je makker, aan het lijden,
Lang je trouwe metgezel.
