You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

Sì dolce è'l tormento

Language: Italian (Italiano)

Si dolce è'l tormento
Ch'in seno mi sta,
Ch'io vivo contento
Per cruda beltà.
Nel ciel di bellezza
S'accreschi fierezza
Et manchi pietà:
Che sempre qual scoglio
All'onda d'orgoglio
Mia fede sarà.

La speme fallace
Rivolgam' il piè.
Diletto ne pace
Non scendano a me.
E l'empia ch'adoro
Mi nieghi ristoro
Di buona mercè:
Tra doglia infinita,
Tra speme tradita
Vivrà la mia fè.

Per foco e per gelo
Riposo non hò.
Nel porto del Cielo
Riposo haverò.
Se colpo mortale
Con rigido strale
Il cor m'impiagò,
Cangiando mia sorte
Col dardo di morte
Il cor sanerò.

Se fiamma d'amore
Già mai non sentì
Quel riggido core
Ch'il cor mi rapì,
Se nega pietate
La cruda beltate
Che l'alma invaghì:
Ben fia che dolente,
Pentita e languente
Sospirimi un dì.

So süß ist die Qual

Language: German (Deutsch) after the Italian (Italiano)

So süß ist die Qual,
die im Herzen ich trage,
dass glücklich ich lebe
der grausamen Schönheit.
Mag am Himmel der Schönheit
auch Hochmut erblühen,
Barmherzigkeit fehlen,
stets fest wie ein Fels
in der Brandung des Hochmuts
wird steh’n meine Treu.

Ein trügerisch Hoffen
verwirrt meine Schritte,
nicht Freude noch Friede
kommen auf mich herab.
Die Grausame,
die ich liebe,
verwehrt das Erbarmen:
Zwischen endlosem Weh
und vergeblichem Hoffen
lebt fort meine Treu.

Im Brennen, im Frieren
find ich keine Ruh.
Im Hafen des Himmels
werd Ruhe ich finden.
Wenn der tödliche Schuss
eines harten Pfeils
das Herz mir durchbohrt,
wird mein Los sich ändern,
mit dem Pfeil des Todes
wird mein Herz genesen.

Wenn dies grausame Herz,
das mein Herz mir genommen,
die Flamme der Liebe
noch niemals verspürte,
wenn die grausame Schöne,
die mich verwirrte,
kein Mitleid empfindet,
so kann es doch sein,
dass sie in Reue und Pein,
eines Tags nach mir seufzt.
