Окончен праздный, шумный день

Окончен праздный, шумный день;
Людская жизнь, умолкнув, дремлет.
Все тихо. Майской ночи тень 
Столицу спящую объемлет.

Но сон от глаз моих бежит,
И при лучах иной денницы
Воображение вертит
Годов утраченных страницы.

Как будто вновь, вдыхая яд
Весенних, страстных сновиденний,
В душе я воскрешаю ряд
Надежд, порывов, заблуждений...

Увы, то призраки одни!
Мне скучно с мертвой их толпою,
И шум их старой болтовни
Уже не властен надо мною.

Лишь тень одна из всех теней
Явилась мне, дыша любовью,
И, верный друг минувших дней,
Склонилась тихо к изголовью.

И смело отдал ей одной
Всю душу я в слезе безмолвной,
Никем незримой, счастья полной...
В слезе, давно хранимой мной!

Beendet der leere Tag

Beendet ist der leere, laute Tag;
Menschliches Leben, verstummend, schlummert ein.
Alles ist still.
Der Schatten der Mainacht umarmt die schlafende Hauptstadt.

Aber der Schlaf flieht meine Augen.
Und, beim Erstrahlen einer anderen Morgenröte,
blättert die Phantasie 
die Seiten der verschwendeten Jahre um. 

Als ob ich von neuem das Gift
der frühlingshaften, leidenschaftlichen Traumbilder atmend,
in der Seele  eine Reihe von
Hoffnungen, Ausbrüche, Irrtümer erweckte...

Ach was, das sind nur Gespenster!
Mich langweilt ihre tote Zahl,
und der Lärm ihres alten Geredes
hat keine Macht mehr über mich. 

Nur ein Schatten, einer von allen,
erschien mir, Liebe atmend,
teuer Freund vergangener Tage,
beugte sich still zum Kopfende.

Und kühn gab ich ihm  alleine
die ganze Seele in einer sprachlosen Träne,
von niemandem gesehen, voller Glück
in der Träne, die ich lang bewahrte.
