damunt les tombes dels reis d’Egipte,
envoltades pel sublim mormol del bosquet de palmeres;
adés a la vall de Rosetta
veu com els coloms fan el niu,
adés escolta els cignes, blancs com la neu,
que altius travesses el llac Moeris.
Quin espectacle! Cap esguard humà ha mai vist
un país reblert d’una més gran esplendor!
Però un silenci terrible
s’estén damunt aquests camps celestials,
amb un hàlit verinós, seguint els seus rastres,
s’escampa pel país la pesta.
La Peri:
Per el vostre primer pecat
que durament, vosaltres pobres, heu d’expiar,
si encara teniu algunes flors de l’Edèn,
la serpent s’esquitlla damunt totes elles.
