Einsamkeit

Schon seh ich Hirt und Herde nimmer,
Ein Lüftchen nur ist mein Geleit;
Der steile Pfad wird steiler immer,
Es wächst die wilde Einsamkeit.

Dort stürzt aus dunkler Felsenpforte
Der Quell mit einem bangen Schrei,
Enteilt dem grauenvollen Orte,
Hinab zum freundlich grünen Mai.

Verschwunden ist das letzte Leben,
Hier grünt kein Blatt, kein Vogel ruft,
Und selbst der Pfad scheint hier zu beben,
So zwischen Wand und Todeskluft.

Komm, Gottesleugner, Gott zu fühlen;
Dein Frevel wird auf diesem Rand
Den Todesabgrund tiefer wühlen,
Dir steiler türmen diese Wand! --

Bientôt je ne verrai plus ni berger ni troupeau,
Seul un souffle d'air sera mon compagnon ;
Le sentier est de plus en plus escarpé,
La rude solitude s'accroît.

Là-bas d'une sombre ouverture dans le rocher jaillit
La source dans un cri d'effroi,
Elle s'enfuit d'un lieu épouvantable
Pour rejoindre en bas l'aimable verdure du mois de mai.

La dernière vie a disparu,
Ici ne verdit aucune feuille, aucun oiseau ne crie,
Et même le sentier ici semble trembler
Entre paroi et mortel ravin.

Viens, athée, pour sentir Dieu ;
Sur cette corniche ton péché
Tombera au plus profond du mortel abîme,
Cette paroi abrupte s'élèvera devant toi !
