Macht mir Müh' und Leben süße
Und vertreibt so Gram als Zeit.
Niemand soll es auch erfahren,
Niemand will ich's offenbaren,
Als der stummen Einsamkeit.

Sollte mich mein Wunsch betrügen,
Find' ich dennoch mein Vergnügen
Und die größte Lust daran,
Daß ich nach der Klugen Lehre
Dieses Bild geheim verehre,
Daß ich nicht besitzen kann.

Wat ik in gedachten liefkoos,
Maakt mijn leven zoet en pijnloos,
Het verdrijft verdriet en tijd.
Niemand mag het ook ontwaren,
Niemand wil ik ’t openbaren
Dan de stille eenzaamheid.
 
Is mijn wens bedrog te noemen,
Toch wil ‘k mijn geluk beroemen:
‘k Heb het grootst plezier daarvan,
Dat ik mag, naar wijzen leren,
In ’t geheim dit beeld vereren
Dat ik niet bezitten kan.
