Trädet i skogen

Det växte en gång ett träd  i skogen,
så skönt och mäktigt jag hade sett det.
Det reste sig över djupens dimmor
till jordens tinnar i enslig glans.

Nu får jag höra att blixten nått det...
Vad kan man göra att åskor härja och blixtar slå?
Jag har ju sett detta träd i skogen
och skall det minnas så länge sångernas fästen stå.

Metsän puu

Kasvoipa kerran metsässä puu,
niin kauniina ja mahtavana näin sen.
Se ulottui syvyyden usvista
maan huipuille asti ainutkertaisessa loistossa.

Nyt saan kuulla, että salama on iskenyt siihen…
Minkä sille voi, että ukkoset riehuvat ja salamat lyövät?
Olenhan minä nähnyt sen puun siellä metsässä
ja muistan sen niin kauan kuin laulut pysyvät.
