Ik dank het aan de glans der groten, Dat zo mijn Niets mij duid’lijk blijkt. Mij heeft hij nooit teruggestoten, Want nimmer heeft hij mij bereikt. Ik zag veel kleinen verder gaan, Maar bleef zelf in mijn cirkel staan. Ze zijn mij lief, de enge perken Waarin ‘k zo onaanzienlijk ben. Hier zie ik pronken al die sterken, Maar band en ster maakt mij geen fan. En ook het prettigste verschiet Haalt uit mijn cirkel weg mij niet. Mocht mij een kwalijk heerschap dreigen: ‘Jij bent niets dan een kleinigheid’, O onschuld! Leer jij dan mij zwijgen En geef mij onverschrokkenheid, Prent mij, zacht troostend, in mijn brein: Het is geen schande, klein te zijn. Doch zou zich buigen in oprechtheid Een grote naar mijn klein domein: Ervaring!
