Wir gehen erst im Tale
den grünen Busch entlang
in einem lauten Schwarme,
mit Kränzen und Gesang.
Und naht es gen den Abend,
dann sind wir längst zu zwein;
die andern tanzen hinten
um wilden Fackelschein.
Und kommen wir zu Berge,
mühselig Stück um Stück,
dann muß auch ich dich lassen
und wandele zurück.
Und schluchzst du einsam oben,
ganz ohne Ziel und Bahn,
dann mußt du eben fliegen
sehr steilen Weg hinan
Bis dorten, wo die Quelle
des Lebens schimmernd rinnt,
da wirst du einen finden,
der lächelt wohlgesinnt.
Er löst dir von der Stirne
mit sanftem Kuß die Pein,
legt dir aufs Herz die Hände,
du schlummerst sachte ein.

along the green bushes
in a noisy throng of people
with wreaths and singing.
And when eventide nears,
then we have already been a twosome for a while;
the others dance behind us
about the wild flame of a torch.
And if we ascend a mountain,
wearisomely, bit by bit,
then I, too, must leave you
and I wander back.
And if up there you sob in solitude,
completely without goal and path,
then you must simply fly
upward on the very steep pathway
Till you reach the place where the wellspring
of life flows, shimmering;
there you shall find Someone
who smiles kindly.
From your brow He shall release
the anguish with a gentle kiss,
shall place His hands upon your heart,
[and] you shall softly go to sleep.
