The sledgehammers pound round about, Black smoke wreaths in circles, Only in the depths is it silent, But not within my heart as well. Therein it roars like a hammer With a very powerful stroke, Whether I be in the depths [of the mine] Whether I be up in the daylight. The foreman’s daughter With cheeks fresh and rosy, She alone has brought my heart Into such a state of distress. No rose has bloomed so beautifully, No swan is as white as she, The heat within the sledgehammer glows Not as fervently as her eyes. Ah, had I but never come Into this quiet valley, For everywhere I see only her, To my agony, only her. Oh foreman’s daughter, You do not know what has happened; Soon I shall be far away from the sledgehammer, And wander upon strange paths. But you shall go on as before, And not wish anything back, Not suspecting that in you A heart lost its entire happiness.
